SLWA PROJECT

PROJECT PROPOSAL ON ORPHANAGES

***

Introduction:

The main objective of this project proposal is to address/resolve the issues identified amongst Orphans, Semi Orphans and young girls who had taken the undignified profession of prostitution. These problems became acute in the whole country and especially in the urban area of Freetown due to the senseless war and Ebola that claimed many lives including the parents and guardians of these children. Some of these children took the streets due to parent’s re-marrying, divorce, absence of love and security in the families, family disputes, and unwanted pregnancies.  They have no care and support, as such involved in rag picking; pick pocketing, participating in anti-social criminal activities and prostitution. We had envisage mainstreaming these children by providing care, support and protection an ORPHANAGE.

Project Mission:

Our mission is to build/open and orphanage, provide support for the orphans, and semi-orphans with shelter, food, clothing, and tuition. The name of the orphanage shall be called WOMEN EMPOWERMENT NETWORK.

The Project – An Overview:

In spite of planned development and special provision for accelerated socio-economic

development of neglected/disadvantaged women, orphans, semi orphan and prostitutes the plans to build/open an orphanage had become a challenge for the Sierra Leone Women’s Association.  Sierra Leone Women’s Association assisted with the payment of salaries and tuition to one of the orphanages but would want to open an orphanage for the neediest children. The project proposed in this scheme is meant for additional support to build/open and run an ORPHANAGE in the Western Area of the capital city of Sierra Leone, Freetown.

Summary

Our aim and objectives are to build/open and orphanage that would host forty children (40) and provide care, support and protection. We would need at least three Care Takers, Two after school program Teachers. two Cooks, one Coordinator and a manager as a starting point. They need a doctor to conduct health check-up & providing medicines. We would provide three nutritious food a day, note books, text books, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, erasers, rulers and 2 sets of uniforms for every orphan that will be living in the orphanage. Every child should have the opportunity for indoor and out-door recreational activities including sports and training in arts and crafts.

What would be the issue, problem, or challenge?

The problems and challenges faced by Sierra Leone Women’s Association are the funds to meet these objectives. Transportation is another spotted problem. The care coordinator would need transportation to get these children from one place to the other especially during recreational activities and going to school. We would need computers in the orphanage which would bring an introduction of technology and innovation to the children. Sierra Leone Women’s Association planned to carry out fundraising dinners to help offset some of these problems. But the fund raised from these fundraising would not get us anywhere with our plans of building an orphanage.

How would this project solve this problem?

If this project is funded, Sierra Leone Women’s Association would build/rent a building to shelter at least forty children in the beginning, buy computers to build a lab that would introduce technology and innovation to the 40 children.  We also carry out after school programs, health check-up, medicines, cosmetics, note books, pencils, pens, markers, erasers, rulers & two sets of uniforms every semester. This proposal covers 40 orphans only. Every child would be provided with nutritional diet, indoor & outdoor recreation, access to play areas and trainings in arts and crafts.

Potential Long Term Impact

The potential long-term impact foreseen for these children would be very positive. They would grow up as happy children with improved self-esteem, encourage knowledge of vocational skills and achieve a higher education. They would experience love & affection just like they would from their parents. Their confidence level will increase & become good asset to the community. They would be developed physically, psychologically & would be good & productive citizens. They would be inspired to be philanthropists & show humanity towards the community.

Message from a beneficiary

Sierra Leone Women’s Association gave me another chance to see the world in a different way and lead my way to a brighter future. They made me to believe in myself and regained self-confidence and higher self-esteem. I obtained nutritious food, quality education & resourceful life. I receive love & affection through my colleagues & organizers in the orphanage.

Methodology:

We have been identifying orphan / semi orphan and young women from child welfare department and other orphanages. Every orphan child accepted in the home would be a case by case bases. That is, depending on the needs of the child.  We would provide counselling and various needs including lodging and boarding.  We would arrange for educational facilities in nearby schools according to their ages and grades. We would also provide home, tuitions, recreation and health care.

In the past, we had been assisting other orphanages with cash to pay salaries. Then we realized that we can open an orphanage for at least 40 most needy children and render them a very good life.  Meanwhile, we are doing fundraising events and reaching out to close family members for support as we pursue our big plans to build a permanent home for the orphan

This home will have three Care Takers who would handling day-to-day administration and activities of the Orphans and two Teachers for after school programs. A doctor will be appointed or a medical center to provide health check-up, and medicines. We would provide three nutritious foods a day, note books, pens, pencils, markers, rulers, erasers and 2 sets of uniforms and cosmetics every semester.

The proposal covers 40 orphans. Every child would be provided with nutritional diet, indoor and

out-door recreation and play facilities and training in crafts and hobbies.

Impact analysis:

The project will be monitored at regular intervals through a “Project Advisory Committee (PAC)” from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children. We would appoint a Project Advisory committee here in the United States of America and in Sierra Leone. This committee would meet periodically and preferably once in every months and advise on various aspects concerning implementation of project and review of the programs/activities to be undertaken. The Project Advisory Committee will also review the accounts and audit statements.
